The liner is the heart of any fabric fish tank. Get it right and the tank serves your farm for years of grow-out cycles; get it wrong and you fight leaks and water-quality problems from month one. Here is how to evaluate a PVC liner fish tank before you order.

Quality aquaculture liners are made from knife-scraped (coated) PVC canvas, not laminated fabric. Knife-scraped material bonds the coating into the base cloth, so it resists peeling and abrasion during cleaning. Ask your supplier which construction they use — it is the single biggest quality factor.
Liner weight is rated in g/m². Common options run from 400 to 1000 g/m²:
Heavier is not automatically better — match the weight to tank size and handling. See our guide to choosing liner weight for details.
Seams fail before fabric does. High-frequency (HF) welding or hot-air welding produces seams stronger than lap-glued joints. Ask how seams are made and whether the tank is water-tested before shipment — our workshop pressure-fills every liner for 48 hours before packing.
A production tank needs a bottom drain for solids, an overflow, and a reinforced valve port. Check that fittings are welded-in with backing patches, not simply glued. Poor port welding is the most common leak point in cheap tanks.
Outdoor tanks face constant sun. Coated PVC with UV stabilizers holds flexibility far longer than bare tarpaulin. If your tanks sit in full sun, confirm the liner is UV-stabilized and ask about dark colors — they inhibit algae growth on the water side.
Plan for simple routines: brush and rinse between cycles, inspect seams yearly, keep sharp objects and footwear off the liner. A tank designed for maintenance access will save you hours every cycle.
Stabilized coated PVC is widely used in aquaculture. Fill the tank, cycle the water, and rinse before stocking — standard practice with any new liner.
Yes. Small punctures are patched with PVC patch material and adhesive. We supply a repair patch kit with every tank.
For most commercial tilapia tanks, 700–850 g/m² is the practical choice. Large-diameter or long-term installations justify 900 g/m² and above.
